Thanks to the support of your donations, we were able to purchase the medication for the deworming of 18 dogs from the "Complices al Rescate" initiative in Huayopampa Huánuco. The aim of the project was to set up the shelter, check the health of the 18 puppies and give talks to the carers to improve the implementation of the shelter.
1 - Target groups
The project was carried out in Huayopampa Huánuco, where between 18 and 20 dogs are housed.
2 - Project activities:
- Meeting with the supervisors and the dogs
- Weight and health check of the dogs
- General deparasitisation
- Delivery of tableware
- Supply of roofing material
- Consultation and recommendations from the vet.
3 - Difficulties and obstacles in implementing the project
The shelter is located in an urban area, so the recommendations and the work involved in caring for the dogs must be followed much more closely to avoid inconvenience to the neighbours. Most of the dogs are sterilised, they are very loving and cooperative. The problem is that some of them have had accidents and as a result wheelchairs or fittings have to be bought for them. As the shelter is supported by donations and voluntary work, the tasks are reduced to one or two people.
4 - Public relations and response to the project
The inspection and deworming of the animals was a success as many of them needed to be dewormed and could be dewormed accordingly. The discussion was very productive as the volunteers lacked knowledge in some areas. Last but not least, the introduction of roofing material for the roof was urgently needed as the owner of the property did not want the dogs to occupy the concrete rooms. The region has a hot climate, which would have resulted in a change in the dogs' quality of life.
5 - Sustainability
We have the support of an emergency vet who will visit us every 3 months. Both the roof and the harness will give the dogs a better quality of life. For this year we are planning to do the same project again, but at the same time we are trying to find or recruit more volunteers.
