About the Event
February 21 is International Mother Language Day, an event commemorated every year by UNESCO member countries to promote cultural and linguistic diversity and multilingualism. February 21 was chosen in honor of the "language martyrs" in Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) who gave their lives on that day, in the midst of public demonstrations in Dhaka, in defense of the right to speak in their mother tongue, Bengali.
The connection with our mother tongues is important for many migrants who are far from their country of origin. Even more so when our language is not recognized or known as such in the host country. Speaking our mother tongue means coming home!
